Virus Protection Updates
| 5/24/2005 | Posted by Patti under General |
You know, I consider myself pretty computer savvy but sometimes I can get pretty complacent about protecting my computer. I have anti-virus software on my system, set to do regular scans and updates. Today, I happened to notice on a website a report of a malicious virus that may be on the loose and decided to check when my system had downloaded updates last. The last update was May 18th. Out of curiousity I ran a manual update and discovered that there was almost 7Megs worth of updates which hadn’t been downloaded.
So, check that all your updates are on your machine.
Chilling, sort of

The first long weekend of the summer is almost at an end. Got some loose ends tied up this weekend and took some time to get some reading done. The weather was pretty unsettled so that really made it easy to settle into reading. Some of the reading I didn’t get done was catching up on some of the blogs I try to follow. Will continue to work on that.
Finally watched “Meet the Fokkers”… really funny movie. “The Aviator” is released on DVD today, definitely want to get that one.
Met with the new President at the Legion to try to help him get his executive setup, selecting chairpeople for the various committees. I’m a past president of the branch and a life member. The new prez has only sat on the executive committee so this is a bit like being tossed into the deep end. We, the past presidents, will not let him sink. We’ll need to work to guide and support him but leave him enough space to set his own mark on the position..
I have plans underway for two more blogs. One will be an experiment in online community for a mailing list I’ve been operating for about a year now. The other will be related to the professional work I do.
Managed to fill out the balance of the summer clergy supply spots for the three parishes in our group. HURRAY!! managed to avoid us having to have morning prayer due to lack of available clergy. That’s a service I really dislike. Usually wont even bother attending when one is held.
Canadian Blog Ranking

Angry in T.O. over at Angry in the Great White North has done a great job of setting up a ranking system for Canadian blogs. If you run a Canadian based blog you should pay a visit and get setup. I’m an insignificant microbe in the Canadian blogosphere at the moment. Guess that means I’m young and barely scratched life as a blogger.
Victoria Day This Weekend
| 5/20/2005 | Posted by Patti under General |
This weekend is the Victoria Day weekend, also called the May two-four weekend, is the official observance of the Queen’s birthday. This holiday has been observed since 1845 in Canada. Originally it actually did take place on May 24th which was Queen Victoria’s natural birthday unless the day fell on a Sunday. Then it would be observed on May 25th by royal proclamation. In 1952, after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne, the holiday was established as the weekend closest to the 24th.
For those who think of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth as the Queen of England, guess again. She is Canada’s constitutional head of state and thus, Queen of Canada. She is in Canada this week on a western tour. Saskatchewan is celebrating their centennial of becoming a province of Canada. Macleans magazine has a well written article about Her Majesty this week.
I’m one of those who support the constitutional role of the monarchy in our country. I have a friend I admire greatly who believes the exact opposite and that Canada should become a republic… “severing the ties to Mother England” he’s referred to it as before. I believe Canada already has severed those ties. We did so when Trudeau repatriated the constitution. We as a country have established our own link to our royal head of state through both our constitution and our membership in the Commonwealth of Nations.
God Save the Queen … and a happy birthday to her.
Government Lives
| 5/19/2005 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics |
As I type the voting is still happening in the house. Looks like the speaker will have to break the tie on the vote to pass the second part of the budget bills. The first passed easily by all but the traiters in the House of Commons voting in favour. The traitors are the Bloc Quebecois. Only in Canada can a party elected to the House be there to break up the country.
The budget vote is a vote of confidence. If the government loses, it is an election. The speaker votes to continue debate on the second reading thus with the government. No election.
Now, Harper has to make a decision. Will he grow up and get down to working to make parliament work or will he continue to act like the petulent little boy he behaves like? I’m hoping for the former… we don’t need to spend a quarter billion bucks for a petulent little pup.
Child Abuse is not just a moral issue

The Times Online reports that Archbishop William Rowans has defended the writings of a children’s author convicted of sexual abuse of young girls:
THE Archbishop of Canterbury has defended the work of a children’s author jailed for 2½ years for sexually abusing his young girl fans.
Rowan Williams said that although his view of William Mayne had changed since the court case, this would not stop him recommending his work, in particular A Game of Dark, which he read as a child.
The Sins of Scripture

Eli over at Multi Medium has posted an excellent overview of Bishop John Shelby Spong’s latest book, The Sins of Scripture. I’ve read a few of Spong’s books, in fact I’m currently reading this one. I find that he provokes me to stop and think about the faith I practice and not just swallow whole everything I’m handed.
New Canadian War Museum
| 5/15/2005 | Posted by Patti under General |
Canada finally opened a war museum that is more than a cubby hole. I haven’t had a chance to go up and have a look although I’d like to take my father up before anything happens to him. What better companion than one of the guys who lived the history that some of that museum portrays.
The Files of the Phantom blogwriter has visited the museum and provides a bit of a photo tour — Inside the New War Museum. Thanks for the peek.
