Canada’s Red Ensign
| 5/10/2005 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics |
Dust My Broom posted an excellent article about the red ensign that is on display in the new Canadian War Museum. This ensign (what Canada had as its flag before the current maple leaf national flag) flew over Vimy Ridge, a battle identified as a defining moment in the life of this great country. Yet, who has ownership of this important national artifact? Not Canada, but England, specifically the Imperial War Museum. The Ensign is on loan to Canada for only 2 years. Seems to me there is something wrong with this picture.
Ticked off Voter

I’m increasingly becoming mad as hell. If all Harper can offer this country is his harping (no pun intended) about the sponsorship scandal then he needs to shut his mouth and let the real leaders get on with the work of parliament. For months that appears to be all he has to offer to this country, is his hammering at what we already know.
Now, he’s decided he’s going to bring down this government by whatever means possible? He’s going to precipitate a cost of $300 million to run an election less than a year after our last election? For what? Other than his itch for power, nothing has changed. Read the rest of this entry »
60 Years + 1 Day

Well, our political leaders arrived in Holland today.. a day late and a dollar short. The current political wrangling in Ottawa precipitated by Harper who has hopped into bed with the traitors from Quebec called the Bloc, both of which is bound and bent to bring down the government. Even out of the country Harper didn’t have the grace to put aside his partisan rhetoric and focus on thanks and commemoration of our Veterans and war dead. He seems to forget that their fight laid the groundwork for his presence on the national scene through the freedom they fought for.
Anyone with a lick of respect for the Vets would never have allowed a situation that required the government to keep everyone in Ottawa in case of a crucial vote.
60 Years Later

Today is VE Day (Victory in Europe). On this day 60 years ago the guns across Europe fell silent to end almost 6 years of hard fought battle. Hitler was dead and along with him his 1,000 year reich which promised to bring with it ethnic cleansing on a scale the world had never seen.
In the week leading up to VE Day, Holland, which was liberated by the Canadians, opened its doors wide to thousands of Canadians to honour and thank those now old men and women for their freedom returned to them. Holland, indeed much of Europe, holds those memories close. Read the rest of this entry »
April is Gone

Hard to believe that April has slipped by and I’ve only done a few posts. I need to pay more attention. Life as always is active but I still need to take time for things that matter to me, like posting. Been missing Blue and pondering if I should/want to get another dog. There are several factors to consider before actually making a decision.
The most important is that I do have two cats, both of which came into the house with Blue already present at the age of 5 weeks old. Read the rest of this entry »
