Heat’s Gone — Time for Steps
| 7/28/2005 | Posted by Patti under General |
The heat wave we suffered through for most of July seems to have moved out, at least for the time being. More normal temperatures of about 25-27 C during the day and down in the teens overnight has settled in. Now that I don’t have to be so careful of my lungs in the heat I can feel comfortable to return to my walk in place work. I’ve started wearing my pedometer to see what I can build up to in steps per day. Read the rest of this entry »
Niece is A Comin & More

There is a long weekend this week, although it is not a stat holidy so not everyone will get it off. I’ve booked three days off next week. My niece, Megan, is heading to Montreal today for a weekend reunion with some of those she was in Katimavik with. She should have a blast. She’s booked her train back to Cobourg instead of London so I can pick her up and we can spend a day or so together. She has to Read the rest of this entry »
The Global South Creates More Chaos
| 7/26/2005 | Posted by Patti under General |
An item on Quo Vadis? today indicates that some of those currently involved in moving to create schism within the Anglican Communion has now moved to create their own ‘alliance’ supposedly committed to the historic Anglican faith.
From my point of view, I’m more than happy to see them form their own alliance and structure. Now there is little need for them to continue to hold the Anglican Communion to ransom. They also need to be willing to enable those in their own provinces to decide between their claim to the ‘historic Anglican faith’ and the living breathing and constantly evolving Anglican faith. I don’t believe that any religion, least of all the Christian faith should exist in a static state. It needs to be relevant in the lives of those who follow it and to be relevant the scriptures need to be reflected on for the message within not clinging to so called ‘rules’ that were formulated in a culture and age so remote from our own to be dead.
Some may claim that the Bible is the inerrant word of God, however, God didn’t reach a big hand down from above and write those words. Humans wrote those words, they believed or others believed, they were guided by the will of God. They may have been. The canon as we know it is not the only books written by those who believed they were guided by the will of God. They may have been too.
Humans decided which books would be admitted to the canon, claiming to be guided. They might have been or they may have been guided by their own desires to shape the faith delivered to be in their own image and desires. Discernment is a struggle. It was for those who determined the canon of scripture and it remains a struggle for those of us who continue to seek and reflect in the shadow of the scriptures and other historical writings.
Who’s right, who’s wrong? Likely we’re all a little of both. One of the strengths of the Anglican Communion has been the ability to remain together even through our differences. That strength recognizes there are no absolutes, we can live in communion even while differing. The stances of the Bishops of the Global south and many of those who support them in the other provinces is that they will not attempt to walk the middle ground any longer. That is their right, but not to the point of destroying that which is grounded in the middle way.
The Logic of Suicide Bombers
| 7/25/2005 | Posted by Patti under Canadian News, Canadian Politics |
Thanks to Darren Barefoot I’ve come across this article on the logic of suicide bombers which is an interview with Robert Pape, author of Dying to Win a book about sucide bombers.
While I’ve often associated the concept of suicide bombing with Islamic Fundamentalists, it actually started with the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka (remember them?). They are a Marxist group, secular in nature. Mr Pape contends that suicide bombings are not about religious ideals. Read the rest of this entry »
Ramblings

July is almost gone and it seems like I have hardly had time to have a look at this blog let alone write in it. I’ve definitely been rather busy. I took over the Peterborough office for the firm I’m an authorized service provider for, Par-O-Law Canada. Lots of people out there need help and representation in dealing with out of control debt.
When you start seeing what appears to be an onslaught of terrorism attacks in various places in the world you start to wonder when and if it is going to hit Canada. Read the rest of this entry »
Bombings in London
| 7/8/2005 | Posted by Patti under Canadian News |
The bombings in London today appear to have been the work of Al Qaeda, in particular Muslims. The Muslims are not necessarily the source of the problem. When we take a look at fundamentalist Christians, fundamentalist Muslims…. We start to see the pattern is not really Muslim or Christian, it is that fundamentalism, that lack of thinking, the listen to the direction from the so called leaders and buy into it to the exclusion of all other reason. This is as great a danger when it is Muslims as when it is Christians. Fundamentalist Christians are at at the root of many of the those who find Christianity abhorent, it isnt because the Bible is abhorent or the Koran is abhoent, it is because of the way those who choose to practice it as fundamentalists choose to practice.
