Peacekeeping in Darfur
| 5/22/2006 | Posted by Patti under Afghanistan |
There has been many calls by politicians, pacifists and others to end or reduce our participation in Afghanistan in order to send in peacekeepers to Darfur. That might be a worthwhile exercise IF there was peace to keep. Read the rest of this entry »
It Isn’t All About Combat
| 5/22/2006 | Posted by Patti under Afghanistan |
We hear mostly about the combat missions our Canadian troops are engaged in in Afghanistan, and sort of as an after thought, the humanitarian part of the mission. The Globe and Mail today reports today on a new program being setup by CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) to provide seed money in the south of Afghanistan for tribes to draw on for building infrastructure.
It’s an article worth reading. An approach very much Canadian, empower the locals rather than telling them what is good for them. Too bad our government doesn’t do the same for its citizens.
Canadian Military Tradition
| 5/19/2006 | Posted by Patti under Afghanistan |
I often wonder where some get the idea that our Canadian military are traditionally peacekeepers.
In the last century, over 1.5 million Canadians fought for this country in two world wars and the Korea War. Thousands have died for this country. In that same century just over 125,000 Canadians have served on peacekeeping tours of duty. Before anyone gets the idea that peacekeeping is ‘soft’ duty, talk to some of those who served in places like Bosnia, Somalia and Rwanda. We sent our military into undeclared wars and then expected them to keep the peace. Read the rest of this entry »
Afghan Mission Extended
| 5/17/2006 | Posted by Patti under Afghanistan |
As flags lowered to half-mast in Kandahar, Afghanistan today, here in Canada Parliament had a debate on the mission of the Canadian forces in Afghanistan underway. In the end, parliament voted to extend the mission by two years. Read the rest of this entry »
We Will Remember Her

They shall grow not old, as we who are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them
In memory of our fallen Canadian:

Ignorance Isn’t Always Bliss
| 5/13/2006 | Posted by Patti under General |
Over at Jim Meyer – Personal he’s written what I hope was simply a blog entry “letter” to George Smitherman the Ontario Health minister about the smoking ban due to come into effect in June. I’m really grateful that he was smart enough to include a very prominent disclaimer that he doesn’t speak for anyone but himself. Read the rest of this entry »
New Categories
| 5/4/2006 | Posted by Patti under Site News |
I’ve realigned some of my posts into new categories. I’ve added Brave Canadians which I pray will be a category which sees very few posts. It is for notices of the deaths of Canadians in Afghanistan. For other comments about the war in Afghanistan I’ve created a category called … really creative here… Afghanistan.
While Political Comments is a nice dumping ground for all things political that is a pretty big subject so occasionally I’ll add political categories like The Boy Harper which will contain postings about guess who.. Stephen Harper… as you can guess, I have huge regard for the boy. I’ve also added a Liberal Leadership category. I hesitated to name it that but with any luck we’ll actually see a leader emerge from the numerous Liberals, former Conservatives and former NDP who have thrown their hat in the ring.
