Ignatieff Leads Race
| 9/30/2006 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics |
This weekend liberals across the country are busy electing delegates to their leadership convention in December. Early results indicate that Ignatieff is about a dozen points ahead of his nearest rival but not above the 30% threshold which would provide him some measure of certainty.
At this point, Rae and Dion could both potentially move ahead of him on the second ballot at a convention. Recent polls have indicated that either of them could be well positioned to do just that. It appears the leadership convention might not be as bland as it appeared to be shaping up to be.
Meanwhile the party has fined Volpe $20,000 for inappropriate conduct. FINED HIM!? excuse me, this turkey should have been booted from the race.
Red Fridays

A movement seems to be getting under way in Canada to wear red on Fridays to show support for our troops. A website is up, but not yet been released, to support this concept. Two successful rallies have taken place, one in Ottawa and one in Toronto. They were well attended and produced a sea of red.
A search on Google for the origin of this movement seems to have come up empty. I saw a segment on Canada AM (CTV network) about a month or so ago which if memory serves me correctly, was two military wives who were trying to promote the concept. I’ve sent an email to the site owner of the RedFriday’s site and suggested they link up to that story.
Either way, I support the concept of visibly showing our support for our troops and have added it to the memorial posts which I post on my blogs when a Canadian soldier is killed in action.
We Will Remember Him

They shall grow not old, as we who are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them

Ignatieff vs Rae
| 9/29/2006 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics |
So, the Torys have leaked a memo in which they have evaluated which of the Liberal leadership contenders they really don’t want to come up against. The candidate memo writer Conservative national campaign chief Doug Finley least wanted to see as leader was Ignatieff. He contended that Rae would have a hard time trying to win in Ontario because of his record as premier here. I tend to agree. Read the rest of this entry »
Let’s Be Wary of Where We Cross the Line

RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli testifies before a parliamentary committee probing the labelling of Maher Arar as a terrorist in 2002, his deportation to Syria by the Americans and his imprisonment and torture in Syria were all a horrible mistake.
Meanwhile, our American neighbours are not only conducting heavily armed anti-terrorism exercises on the Great Lakes towards the day that terrorists will launch an invasion from Canada, they are also passing bills which will allow the American government to sanction torture of non-Americans labelled as terrorists. Karzai Comes to Canada
| 9/19/2006 | Posted by Patti under Afghanistan |
Afghan President Hamid Karzai will arrive in Canada on Friday for a two day visit. Amongst the first order of business will be a speech to Parliament. Karzai wants to explain the Afghan perspective and convey the wishes and hopes of the Afghan people. A perspective that many parliamentarians, especially in the cowardly NDP section needs to hear and heed. Read the rest of this entry »
Service Not for Self

Once again the top spot on my blogs is given over to a post in honour of more Canadians killed in service to this great country. Four more young Canadians have given their lives. They were part of foot patrol in the Panjwayi district in Afghanistan when a suicide bomber on a bicycle rode into their vicinity and detonated himself. There was no way the soldiers could have known what was coming at them. Read the rest of this entry »
