Three Thousand Milestone Past
| 12/31/2006 | Posted by Patti under World News |
The US forces in Iraq have sustained their 3,000th combat death. That isn’t a milestone that I expect anyone is going to celebrate except maybe the leaders of the insurgency there. Our American neighbours to the south are once again sending their young men and women off to war that is becoming increasingly clear should never have been undertaken.
It is becoming even more clear that there is no way the US will be able to secure peace in that country nor be able to bring their troops home any time soon. It is a quagmire that I would not envy any country to be mired in. Read the rest of this entry »
Tories Quietly Admit to Being Wrong
| 12/28/2006 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics, Harper |
After months of denying they had done anything wrong, the Conservatives, led by Stephen Harper, are admitting they failed to publicly report hundreds of thousands worth of donations to their party in violation of federal law. How convenient, make the admission during the holiday season when most people wont even notice and the opposition isn’t readily available in the house to take them to task.
So, remind me, this is the government whose claim to fame and ticket to governance was establishing themselves as the clean guys who played by the rules? Read the rest of this entry »
Canadian Soldier Newsmaker of the Year
| 12/28/2006 | Posted by Patti under Afghanistan, Brave Canadians, Canadian News |
Canadian Press has named the Canadian Soldier newsmaker of the year. Canadians have been acutely aware of the work of our men and women in the military this year. Nothing brought that awareness into sharper focus than the arrival home from Afghanistan of 36 of those brave men and women in flag draped coffins borne on the shoulders of their comrades in arms.
Not since the Korea War has Canada suffered so many combat deaths in one year. During the three years of that war we lost 516 Canadians, all volunteers. We have been in Afghanistan since 2002 in varying degrees but it has only been in the last year Read the rest of this entry »
Panda Has Twins
| 12/28/2006 | Posted by Patti under General |
One of the world’s rarest animals — a giant Panda — has given birth to a set of twins at a zoo in Japan on December 23rd which is also the Japanese Emporer’s birthday. Mother and twins (sex not yet determined) are doing well. They are considered to be premature with one of them weighing only 85 grams (there is 454 grams in a pound), the other weighed 196 grams. The two parent pandas Mei Mei and her partner Eimei are both on loan to the Japanese zoo from China.

Dion Becomes Liberal Leader
| 12/3/2006 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics |
I have to admit, I spent a good part of this weekend either watching the Liberal convention or listening to the radio to catch the latest results. I also have to admit, I didn’t see this result coming but the good news is, I think there might just be a political leader that I can support in this country. Anyone who has read this blog before will know, Harper and Taliban Jack are the last politicians I would consider even voting for the local candidate with them at the head of their respective parties.
While my vote has often gone to the Liberals over the years, it is not set in stone. I look at the quality of the candidate in the riding and most of all at the leader (or alleged leader in some cases) and decide on what I like and don’t like before voting. If the local candidate is a dweeb and I can hang my hat on what I see in the leader I’ll hold my nose and vote the party. If I don’t like the leader, they could run Christ himself as the local candidate and it wont happen. Read the rest of this entry »
