| 1/31/2007 | Posted by Patti under Canadian News |

The babies parents are Jehovah Witnesses which prohibits the use of blood transfusions. The province has seized the babies to allow them to receive blood transfusions. Two of the sextuplets died during January. Blood transfusions are commonly needed for babies in multiple births and preemies.
Tories Attack Ads Gain Little
| 1/30/2007 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics |
Some have refered to the attack ads released this weekend by the Tories as ‘smart politics’ while many others have indicated they not only dislike the concept but are growing increasingly weary of a constant election campaign, the petty politics and the cheap shots.
Questions were raised yesterday about potential copyright issues in the Tories use of the Liberal leadership footage in the ads. At this point it is unknown how the Tories obtained the footage they used.Â

Hope you find something that you enjoy reading. If you do, drop me a comment.
Tories Running Scared
| 1/29/2007 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics, Harper |
I turned on my favourite morning program Canada AM this morning to discover that not only were they talking about the attack ads the Conservatives have launched against the Liberals, specifically Stephane Dion, the program was running them as sponsors. So, instead of the ‘sound bites’ that one would normally see, I saw the actual ads. I’m not the least bit impressed.
Guilt By Association
| 1/27/2007 | Posted by Patti under War on Terror |
It appears that the main reason that the US is standing by it’s decision to keep Mahar Arar on their terrorist watch lists is some of his travel patterns (he traveled a lot related to his work) and people he knows. Both ‘markers’ of guilt are quite legal in post 9/11 United States. It is not legal in Canada to consider someone guilty based on associates, close and casual, although I have no doubt that decisions to investigate someone are based on association.
Harper on Arar Case — Apology & Settlement
| 1/26/2007 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics, Harper |
Prime Minister Harper, yes I didn’t call him the boy this time, is just in the process of holding a press conference to announce a settlement which has been arrived at with Maher Arar. The settlement is $10.5 million dollars plus legal costs in financial compensation and an official apology from the Government of Canada for the treatment he received.
US Pledges More Support in Afghanistan, Bloc Wants Poppy Action
| 1/26/2007 | Posted by Patti under Afghanistan, Canadian Politics |
The Bush government has indicated they will be extending the tours of duty of 3,200 American soldiers in Afghanistan in order to bolster troop numbers for what is expected to be a bloody spring surge by the Taliban. The government is also planning to take a plea to Congress for $10billion in additional aid for the country; $8billion for reconstruction and $2billion for training of Afghan police.
Dion Wants Afghanistan Probed
| 1/25/2007 | Posted by Patti under Afghanistan, Canadian Politics |
Stephane Dion, the newly minted leader of the federal liberals, is calling for a probe by the Commons foreign affairs committee to look into Canada’s role in the war in Afghanistan. This would position the Liberals to be sharply critical of our role there but to stop short of the shameful stance of the NDP who are demanding withdrawal of our troops, which would amount to a defeat for Canada and a win for the Taliban and their supporters.Â
