New Radio Station in Kandahar Based in Canada
| 1/6/2007 | Posted by Patti under Afghanistan |
The Canadian military has a radio station set to go on the air today in the city of Kandahar. The station will use the call sign of KANA-FM and will be targeted towards young people 15-25 years of age. It will broadcast Afghan and Bollywood music and features stories about Afghan people living at home and abroad.
The station is based at an undisclosed location in Canada and broadcast via satellite to Kandahar for security reasons. The military will occasionally use the radio for public broadcasting using translators. It is not meant to be a propaganda tool but to bring Afghans programming that otherwise could become a target for the Taliban.
The station will not compete with other commercial stations as it will not sell advertising.
