Rosato Saga Ends

Over the last several weeks I’ve watched the saga of comic actor Tony Rosato being played out in a Kingston courtroom. Rosato is a former star of Saturday Night Live. He’s been held in jail for the last 2.5 years awaiting trial on the charges of criminal harassment. He’s now been convicted of criminally harassing his wife and now 3 year old daughter.
What has made this case particularly difficult to watch is that Rosato is mentally ill and was at the time of the offence. The man should have been in treatment for the last 2 plus years not languishing in a jail cell waiting for a trial that would inevitably end with him being sent to treatment.
Had the court had the ability to order him into treatment when he was first diagnosed he could have been spared the rather public humiliation of the trial. For all our forward progress on understanding the nature of mental health, we continue to subject those suffering from mental illness to cruel handling.
