Ontario Election is Official
It’s now official, Ontario is into an election campaign. We vote on October 10th, a month from now. On the same day we vote on a referendum. The question is if we’ll agree to adopt the recommendations of the Citizens Assembly to revamp our electoral process using a mixed member proportional representation system.
The election, using our current first past the post system, pits Premier Dalton McGuinty of the Liberals against John Tory of the Conservatives and Howard Hampton of the NDP. In the run up to the election, it looks like we’ll have McGuinty defending his record of the last four years with Tory and Hampton attacking it. How creative.
Just for fun, Tory has decided to take a stand on an issue which was for the most part a fringe issue, if at all, funding of religious schools in Ontario. He says he’ll extend full funding to religious schools provided they hire accredited teachers and teach the Ontario curriculum. That’s one way of turning a non issue into one.
Could be an interesting month.
