Afghanistan Debate
I’m going to say right at the outset here. I support our troops and their mission in Afghanistan. I grow weary and increasingly disgusted by the politicalization of the mission. Politicians hunting for votes and talking points to oppose another party rather than truly hunting down what is the right thing to do.
As much as I hate the fact the clown is Prime Minister, the only one of the bunch that seems to be willing to say it is right for Canada to stay and finish the job is Harper. Dion and Layton’s parties both try to claim social justice as part of their reason to be yet both would see Canada abdicate from Afghanistan and allow the country to dissolve into chaos in the vacuum it would create. As for Duceppe, he heads up a party which takes treason to a whole new level so why would I give a damn what he thinks about anything Canada does.
Layton doesn’t seem to care if or who filled Canada’s commitment while he’s busy making demands that the troops be withdrawn now rather than at the end of our current commitment. Course, that little boy can do that since he’s not about to become Prime Minister, thank God. Dion is demanding that the government notify NATO now that Canada will be departing our combat role in 2009 so a replacement nation can be found. If no nation will step forward to beef up the boots on the ground now, what makes Dion think one will step into the hole we’ll be creating?
He also seems to be ignoring that there is a job to do there and in order to rebuild/build the infrastructure and security forces the country needs to look after themselves, security has to be established. In order to establish security, combat committed troops are necessary. While the media focuses on the restive southern provinces, they only rarely let us know that the majority of the country lives in relative peace.
The UN reports that violence appears to be escalating in the southern area and the security becoming harder to attain. That is not a failure on the part of the troops serving there, it is a failure on the part of other NATO countries who have failed to step to the plate and commit combat troops into the area. Pakistan has finally started trying to push into the lawless frontier area along the Afghani / Pakistan border.
The effect is that the forces that the Taliban / al Qaeda have been training in that area are now finding less safe refuge and they are being flushed out. If they were being flushed into the waiting sights of enough troops the area would be secured. The fact is they are not so security has to be won and sometimes rewon. That is a failure of other NATO countries to step forward.
Canada will have spent almost a billion on aid to the Afghani people by the end of this year. That aid is difficult enough to get to the hardest hit people, it would be impossible to get to them if combat troops, like Canada’s, weren’t on the ground. If the Opposition parties are so willing to be so reckless with the well being of Afghanistan, how could we ever trust them with our own country?
