Yeah, I really did write that title. As I’ve watched with some curiosity as Obama gained steam in his bid to become US President, actually the first black President, the thought has crossed my mind to wonder how long he’d be allowed to live during the quest. Face it, our American neighbours to the south do have a bit of a history in that regard.
It’s a question I have been loath to ask. It has been a generation or two since someone assassinated a prominent political leader in the US. It is possible that attitudes down there have changed and even the hard core revolutionary types can figure ways to fight other than through political murder. After all, Bush managed to get through his two terms without anyone taking a shot at him.
Apparently I’m not the only one who has had that question cross their mind. In fact, others are giving that question some serious thought. Not the committing an act of assassination but the wondering if he will manage to survive being a candidate let alone if he should become President. It would be a gigantic leap of all time for the American people to elect a black man.
Marlon James on his blog reports that Time had posted a headline recently asking the question that many have been asking for at least two years. It is apparently a valid enough question that the secret service have provided Obama with a security detail that is almost the same as what a President has.
The piece is well written, it is definitely something that warrants thought and attention as this historic campaign to the south takes place.
