You know, I’ve often been of the opinion that if you don’t really have the courage of your convictions, or for that matter, any convictions — you keep a low profile and keep your mouth shut. That likely came about from my late father often commenting about keeping ones mouth shut rather than opening it and proving yourself the fool.
These days, Dion and some other Liberals are doing a real good job of proving the wisdom of that advice. This behaviour of mouthing to the media and anyone who will listen that the Harper Conservatives are the ‘worse’ government ever for whatever soapbox of the day topic and then either walking out or failing to even show up to defeat them is utter spineless crap.
Ok, the Liberals aren’t ready to fight an election. Fine, believe it or not, Canadians are adult enough to realize that. If the Liberals aren’t able to vote in favour of the government policies and aren’t bothered enough by the government’s actions to bring them down then bloody stand up and say so.
“The Liberal party will not give the government legitimacy by voting in their favour and will for now refrain from defeating them and costing the country an election” and then sitting down and shutting up is a lot more adult than either not showing up in the House or walking out en mass.
Instead of yapping about how bad the Conservatives are, talk about what good a Liberal government could be. However, keep in mind that Canadians aren’t stupid, we would notice the talk and lack of action…. remember keep mouth shut lest you be thought a fool?
The Cadman issue, yeah it leaves the Cons, especially Harper, looking very dirty. It will likely lead to Dona Cadman being seriously questioned about the blind faith she’s having in running for the party that appears to have tried to bribe her dying husband. Is it enough to cause an election? Hell NO!
We’re actually seeing a glimpse of a spine being attached to the Liberal party with Harper trying to bully through the courts and the party ignoring him. Keep it up, you want to claim libel Stevie, you’re going to need to prove there isn’t smoke.
The leak of the memo about Obama’s political rhetoric. You know what, diplomatically it is wrong and might have influenced a foreign country’s election process. Other than a momentary blip, I rather doubt it will really matter in the long run. For the most part, the American media has moved on while Canadian opposition politicians and media are still blathering about it. Move on for pete sake!
I don’t much like Harper. The only thing I can have some respect for him over is his support of the military and resolve in regards to our mission in Afghanistan. I can find some respect for Dion for finding common ground enough to support the mission. Nothing wrong with trying to demand change that will benefit all involved, just support the damn mission.
Unfortunately, the main reason I don’t want to see this government fall right now is that it would be an election to get the same thing back again. Dion hasn’t found a spine to join his posture these days. He also hasn’t found the wisdom to outwit Harper. He’s not yet come of age to play in the government sandbox. He needs to stay in Opposition for more training.
