RCMP Decline to Lay Charges in Cadman Affair
The RCMP have concluded there is no evidence in order to lay criminal charges in the alleged attempt to bribe the late Chuck Cadman to rejoin the Conservative caucus. Some would consider that to be the end of the matter. That would be a pretty naive concept in my opinion.
Cadman’s widow as well as his daughter and son-in-law all have stated that Cadman told them of the attempt to bribe him into helping to topple the government of Paul Martin. In the end, on that particular vote, Cadman was the lone vote that kept the government alive. Harper is on tape as stating to a writer, who has recently published a book on Cadman, that offers of ‘financial considerations’ were made.
Exactly what those considerations were have never been explained. While the Mounties may not have a case that can be prosecuted in court, there is certainly that court of public opinion that Harper needs to address. Instead, he chooses to use the courts to take the Liberal Party of Canada to court for posting articles on the issue on their website.
If I was living in the riding of Cadman’s widow, who is now running for the Conservatives, I’d surely be thinking twice about even considering voting for her. I’d want to know without a doubt what those ‘financial considerations’ were. Chuck Cadman was a man of integrity and principle. If he was angry over the offer from the Conservatives, it is a pretty sure bet that the offer was dirty. Ms Cadman needs to show better judgement than to want to be in bed with the same party.
