The province of Ontario has moved to ban smoking in cars where children under the age of 16 are present. I have one word for that, FINALLY!!
I banned smoking in my vehicle the day I started driving my first one back when I was 16. I grew up in a home where both parents smoked. My mother wasn’t a very heavy smoker, in fact, I was a teenager before I knew she smoked. Had I paid closer attention, I should have wondered why my father smoked both regular and menthol cigarettes.
I hated those long trips when dad would smoke. Sometimes my mother would get ticked at him smoking in the car but for the most part she didn’t say much. In some ways, I’ve wondered why the province didn’t ban smoking in cars before smoking in other places. Logically, in an enclosed vehicle, the toxicity of the smoke would just be higher. But I guess, as long as you are only killing yourself, that is acceptable.
Having said I agree with the ban, it is not going to be easily enforceable. The police have enough to do without peering into cars for someone smoking with a kid in the car. Just smelling a smoke odour when making a stop wont necessarily be enough without finding the smoking cigarette. Is going to be interesting to see how that pans out.
