Ok, it is now almost 10 days after the Canadian election and I haven’t yet commented. No, I haven’t been licking my wounds because the boy Harper got back in and with more seats. Life just has been a bit rushed lately. It will be a bit rushed for the next two to three weeks as Remembrance Day approaches. Damn offline life intruding into my blogging time!

Anyways, back to the election. As the dust settles on the worst showing by the Liberals in at least 20 years, Dion has said he will leave the leadership of the Liberal party as soon as a new leader has been chosen. Some consider him to be a lame duck leader but that isn’t necessarily so as the alternative is a dog fight between the Rae and Ignatieff camps over who will be interim leader. Dion staying on stops that fight from taking place in the midst of preparing for a leadership race.

While I agree that Dion pretty much had to depart, I hate to see it coming about in part due to the character assassination of the Conservatives. I don’t believe I’ve ever witnessed the sustained character assault on any leader that Dion has endured. If that doesn’t test your mettle as a leader, I don’t know what will. A lesser man would have quit and run for the hills, he’s persevered and fought a hard fought campaign.

He isn’t without blame though, he did insist on fighting a brutal battle with a main platform that offered untested and drastic change. The Conservatives were able to effectively brand the shift as risky and costing Canadians out of their pockets. I don’t know if it wouldn’t have but at least in theory, it would have resulted in tax savings for Canadians. I just don’t know how effectively the polluters would have been able to pass their increased cost on and if those increased costs would have ultimately cost us more. At this point we aren’t going to learn that.

The options for the Liberals on who will lead them this time round are pretty thin. I personally don’t believe either Rae or Ignatieff should even be considered as viable. Both of them carry way too much baggage and I’m not completely convinced they haven’t been a factor in the party not solidly getting behind Dion when they needed to put their crap behind them and knuckle down. That doesn’t leave much in the way of choices.

I know that while I might consider a modest contribution to the party, I’m not about to do so until I see where the leadership is going. I suspect I’m not alone. Thinking Canadians know that if Harper is going to be kicked out of power, it is going to be by the Liberals but not in the current state of the party. Leadership is not the only problem the party lacks.
