Everytime I see one of those press scrums were members of the media not only have their mics pressed just about into the person’s face but are often practically close enough to kiss them, I want to throw up a wall and push the beggars back. See, I’m one of those people who really prefers to have some personal space around her. I hate crowds and especially ones that you can barely move without coming into contact with someone close by.

So, when I read the piece in the Globe & Mail about Premier Dalton McGuinty asking reporters to stand back about five feet from him, I had some empathy. The piece points out that McGuinty has tried to move reporters out of his face in a good natured manner over the years without success. I can understand that.

Generally, I find people who don’t really find a need for personal space generally have a hard time understanding someone who does. In really bad cases, it generates a response of the other person deciding that they need to ‘cure’ you of your desire to have some open air around you. No, you don’t need to find the cure, just move the hell back!

I don’t like people getting up close and personal when they are talking to me, I don’t like people assuming they have a right to hug me because they like to hug and I don’t like people hovering over me, especially when I’m seated. I usually try my best to quietly extract myself from those situations and move to safer ground. When I can’t, I do what McGuinty did, I tell the offenders.

Now, creating a ‘five foot rule’ seems a tad excessive. A couple of feet will usually do it but I think I get the reason though. See, a two foot rule is just sooo easy to nudge over the line on. When one or two are doing that, that is one thing but you get a throng of reporters eager to try to get the ‘scoop’ on their colleagues and two feet disappears faster than you can blink an eye.

John Tory, the loser Conservative leader, is trying to make a big deal out of McGuinty’s request to the media. He’s trying to make it out that McGuinty is trying to avoid the hard questions and reality of the current economic situation. Tory, you know, you’re a flipping windbag who couldn’t even get himself elected let alone lead his party to victory.

If he can’t get what McGuinty is asking for, I think I know why he’s a loser. He’s out of touch with people, just the basics of people, let alone their needs in today’s economy.

So, if someone wants you to back off and put some clear air between them and you, respect the request before someone decides to invoke a five foot rule. I can think of a few people I know who I’d love to put a 10 foot pole rule into effect but that is a post for another day.
