Obama Arrives in Ottawa Today
Barak Obama arrives in Ottawa today for his first foreign visit since taking office in January. Ottawa is the traditional stop for new presidents, although his predecessor chose to visit Mexico first. While the visit is for the most party barely registering on the American media, the Canadian media seems to be going gaga over the arrival.
Obama will be in the nation’s capital a mere 6 hours or so and is not expected to appear in public. Security will be massive, crowds are expected to be large on the hill as people gather in the hope of catching a glimpse of him.
He’ll be greeted at the airport by Governor-General Michaelle Jean with little pomp and ceremony. From there he’ll travel to the Hill for a private meeting with Harper, talks with various government officials, a working lunch in the Senate speakers suite before being returned to the airport where he’ll have a brief meeting with Ignatieff before boarding Air Force One to be back in Washington in time for supper with Michelle.
Much speculation has taken place about what the two leaders will talk about. Officially, the main subjects appear to be the economy, Afghanistan and the environment. Nothing monumental is expected to come out of the talks. Visits like this are generally get to know you type trips.
For the media, these encounters are rift with speculation and attempts to read nuance into every move that occurs or doesn’t occur. The airport meeting with Ignatieff has drawn considerable comment both from the media and others. It is traditional for the leader of the Official Opposition to meet with visiting heads of state.
Ignatieff’s office is a floor above where Obama will be yet the PMO has put the meeting at the airport claiming it is the wishes of the American protocal people. Yeah right, and there will be two moons in the sky tonight. It doesn’t take much to figure out that Harper wants the optics to be the meeting is an ‘addon’ rather than an expected part of the event.
Had Martin done that to Harper when his buddy Bush arrived in Canada, there would have been hell to pay. But then Martin has class and Harper has demonstrated repeatedly, he lacks that gift. Speaking of which, I hope that Obama manages to find some semblance of personality in our rather dour PM.
Maybe he’ll wear a blue sweater cardigan for the occasion to warm him up a bit.

Where Is the Recalibration?
Well, I’ve read through the Throne Speech which was delivered yesterday. I’ve read some of the commentary which has appeared this morning in reaction to it. For the most part, they are echoing my thoughts as I read through the speech, where exactly is the recalibration? There was very little real focus or meat. I
Some Thoughts on Democratic Reform
Having spent some time exploring through the discussions at the Facebook page Canadians Against Proroguing Government I have noticed many of the discussions have centered around the participants view on democratic reform. In view of Harper’s rather disturbing abuse of our parliamentary system, this is pretty understandable. In the other Westminster style parliamentary systems throughout
Haiti Becomes Harper’s “Relief”
Since I believe in giving credit where credit is due, Harper has responded decisively to the crisis in Haiti by sending our troops and resources into the area to assist with aid and security. He was able to do this in a timely manner, the first flights arrived in Haiti on Wednesday, because of one
Online Noise or Springboard to Action?
I’ve been watching a group on Facebook for the last couple of days called Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament. The group was formed on December 30th in response to Harper proroguing parliament the second time in a year. On Tuesday (Jan 5th) the group had just over 20,000 members, as of this writing it has surpassed

PM Harper’s arrival in China yesterday started off rather bizarrely by him choosing to upstage Flaherty (who was back here in Canada) and release the latest economic update. Guess that was as far as he could get from the House of Commons. Either that or he realized what a pompous little jerk Flaherty is and

Last week I was having lunch with a friend and briefly the subject of politics came up. I expressed some of my views on Ignatieff to which she responded that I should write him a letter about my views. My response was, I would but it would not likely get anywhere near him. I thought

After months of railing against the ‘separatists’ and ‘socialists’ bringing this country to rack and ruin by aligning with the Liberals to defeat the Conservatives, Harper is being saved from a non-confidence vote by those very same separatists & socialists. The NDP in particular (those dangerous socialists) have had a pretty easy ride in the
Yes, I’ve Joined the Liberal Party, Get Over It!
Back in July, I made a move rather out of character for me — I joined the Liberal Party of Canada. Generally I have always tended towards an attitude of keeping my options fully open by belonging to no particular party. So, why the change? I’m fed up with Harper; his behaviour, his atittude, his
OK, Who Let the Other Harper Out of His Cage?
After weeks of there being just a bit of a semblance that maybe the boys and girls on Parliament Hill were capable of playing nice and getting the business of government done — someone let the other Harper out of his cage. Mayhem threatens, again. Is Harper completely clueless or does he just prefer to
Parliament Opens, Let the Games Begin
Well, parliament has reopened without a lot of pomp and circumstance. The lack of show was more due to the frigid cold than any austerity move. I’ve been in Ottawa and around the Hill this time of year, it is VERY cold there. The throne speech, written by the government and delivered by the Governor
