Liberal leader, Michael Ignatieff, has said the Official Opposition will oppose the government instead of propping them up. The Liberals have pledged to bring down the government at the first opportunity. I can but hope. Yes, I know, that means the fourth election in just over five years.

In typical fashion, Harper has responded by referring to this decision by calling it ‘playing games’ and ‘political opportunism’ — ya mean that wasn’t what Harper was doing when he pulled the plug a year ago and went to the poll without the House having a confidence vote? Of course Harper wasn’t ‘playing games’ when he rushed off to the Governor General to have Parliamen prorogued rather than face a confidence vote last December…. no, not him.

Harper and his band of bullies are going to do their best to try to present themselves as the thin line between the Canadian economy recovering from this recession and us plunging further into the abyss. And I have some swamp land in Florida for those who believe that falsehood.

I’m sure Harper was really dedicated to protecting the economy when he first denied we were entering a serious recession during the last election campaign as the stock markets crashed around him. It was really just a ‘buying opportunity’ — for those who had any money left. He was likely protecting it again when his Finance lackey brought in a fall economic statement which had zero stimulus measures in — the lack of which provoked the opposition into actually agreeing on their lack of confidence in the government.

As for the stimulus package he ultimately brought in, under threat of being toppled, talk is cheap, how much of it is actually out there? It doesn’t seem to flow unless the government is under threat of being brought down, but that isn’t political games.

I’ve watched and hoped repeatedly that Harper would finally ‘get it’ that in a minority government the Prime Minister has a duty to reach out to the other parties and find points of compromise in order to maintain the confidence of the House. Traditionally, a minority government should bring about excellent legislation which reflects the consultation and consensus necessary to get the measures passed.

This has not been the case with Harper. He arrogantly tries to act like he has a majority and repeatedly engages in partisanship to the point the atmosphere in the House is poisoned. Parliamentary committees for the most part have been brought to a halt through obstruction from Conservative members who want their own way or the highway.

I think it is time we showed them the highway. I’m fed up with the band of bullies who care nothing for anything except their hold on power.
