Yes, I’ve Joined the Liberal Party, Get Over It!
Back in July, I made a move rather out of character for me — I joined the Liberal Party of Canada. Generally I have always tended towards an attitude of keeping my options fully open by belonging to no particular party. So, why the change? I’m fed up with Harper; his behaviour, his atittude, his politic — you name it. He needs to go.
This evening, I will be taking that move one step further. I’m going to show up at the nomination meeting for Northumberland Quinte West. I’m going to be supporting Andrew McFayden for the Liberal candidate should (and it is looking very likely) an election is called this fall. I find myself impressed with Andrew, he has a straightforward passion for wanting to serve the people of this riding. I know, a novel thought for a politician, he’ll likely get eaten alive in Ottawa but hey, if he’s willing to go there, I’m willing to support his passion.
I’ve taken both of these steps because I’m fed up with the poisoned atmosphere that Harper and his minions have injected into the House of Commons, their lies, deceits, ultra-partisanship, obstruction of the work of Parliament and lust for power more than truly leading this country.
Harper heads up one of the worst governments I’ve ever seen in this country. Murray Dobbin over at rabble.ca writes an entry today which could have easily come from my fingers, he’s bang on. I’m just thankful Harper has never managed to get a majority government, he’s bad enough with a minority.
Does that mean I’m infatuated with Ignatieff? No, it means that the more I see of Ignatieff, the more I’m willing to support him in replacing Harper. I’ve had my doubts about Ignatieff and I’d definitely feel better if Ignatieff, now that he’s declared his intention to stop supporting the government, would make haste to put substance to the lofty rhetoric he’s so far given about what a Liberal government would look like.
On one hand, I can understand why he doesn’t want to give Harper too much lead time to try to rip apart Ignatieff’s vision for the country with lies and distortions but, I need to know. Canadians need to know what stands the Liberals are willing to take. You don’t need to convince me that Harper is deceitful, egomanical, tyrannical or much else.
I just need to know more about Michael Ignatieff and his vision for Canada and how he plans to attain that vision. I’d rather not be kept waiting.
