New Immigrant Guide Book
| 11/13/2009 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics |
It isn’t often I have much positive to say about Harper and his gang of thugs behaviour in Ottawa. I’ve now found a second positive thing to talk about from this government, not bad in four years. The first, for anyone who thinks I have never liked anything about them is his apparent commitment to renew and rebuild our Canadian Armed Forces. I always hated the constant cuts previous governments had engaged in.
This second item has just been released, the updated study guide for new immigrants. I’ve looked through the guide and am pleased to see it, to me, provides a broader view of Canada, its past, values, and society in general. It talks about some of the more painful aspects of our past, explains our structure of government, our attachment to the Monarchy as part of that government, the military etc.
There have been criticisms that the guide doesn’t mention the environment nor does it depict women as being a presence in the country. Both of the criticisms are legitimate, neither of them surprise me. This government would like to ignore the existence of both the environment and the need to protect it and the equality of women. Harper has shown repeatedly that if not for political pressure to have women involved, he’d like a boys club around him and for the most part there is. (more…)
Yes, I’ve Joined the Liberal Party, Get Over It!

Back in July, I made a move rather out of character for me — I joined the Liberal Party of Canada. Generally I have always tended towards an attitude of keeping my options fully open by belonging to no particular party. So, why the change? I’m fed up with Harper; his behaviour, his atittude, his politic — you name it. He needs to go.
This evening, I will be taking that move one step further. I’m going to show up at the nomination meeting for Northumberland Quinte West. I’m going to be supporting Andrew McFayden for the Liberal candidate should (and it is looking very likely) an election is called this fall. I find myself impressed with Andrew, he has a straightforward passion for wanting to serve the people of this riding. I know, a novel thought for a politician, he’ll likely get eaten alive in Ottawa but hey, if he’s willing to go there, I’m willing to support his passion. (more…)
Gun Registry Needs to Stay
| 4/21/2009 | Posted by Patti under Canadian Politics |
Harper’s Conservatives have moved to attempt to put an end to the gun registry in Canada. The registry was created by the Liberals when in government to register long rifles, handguns having been subject to gun controls for years.
A private member’s bill was tabled in the House of Commons first. The bill submitted by Tory MP Garry Breitkreuz went too far in that it not only eliminted the long gun registry it loosed up controls on some other weapons like machine guns. The Tories then made the rather unusual move of tabling another bill in the Senate instead of the House first.
Since the Senate is Liberal dominated, and the Liberals have to this point vowed to defeat the bill, it appears the Conservatives are trying to appear to be getting rid of the registry while not really getting rid of it. They might make their western Conservative constituency happy by eliminating the registry, it will tick off voters they are trying to win over — like me. (more…)
